Tk 9,658cr proposed for disaster management and relief ministry

DHAKA, June 7, 2018 (BSS)- An allocation of Taka 9,658 crore has been made for the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry in the proposed budget for fiscal (FY) 2018-19.

The allocation is Taka 976 crore more than the revised budget of the previous FY 2017-18 of Taka 8,682 crore. The proposed budget of the fiscal 2017-18 for the ministry was Taka 8,853 crore.

Of the total allocated Taka 9,658 crore, Taka 3,496 crore will be spent under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) and Taka 6,162 crore under non-development sector.

Placing the budget proposals at the Jatiya Sangsad here today, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said, ongoing activities to increase awareness and resilience regarding earthquake and other disaster management will be continued.

“We have taken steps to identify the buildings under risks of earthquakes. Alongside, steps have been taken for training the engineers, city planners, architects and even workers on building earthquake-tolerating buildings,” he said.

As part of long-term preparation for resisting earthquakes, the finance minister said preparing Micro Zonation Map of 1,528 sq km and construction of RMG factories and their retrofitting through banks and lending money at 6 per cent interest along with technical assistance from Directorate of Housing will be implemented.

Muhith also mentioned that the government is constructing an earthquake-resistant and power-saving green building for Fire Service and Civil Defence Department at Mirpur.
