Strengthening local government institutions stressed

GAIBANDHA, Jan 5, 2020 (BSS) – Speakers at a function here today
underscored the need for strengthening the local government institutions for
successful implementation of development programmes.

An emphasis should also be given to take necessary measures for ensuring
transparency and accountability of officials and employees who are involved
with development programmes, they addressing a district half-yearly
coordination meeting of Local Governance Support Project (LGSP-3) at the
conference room of the District Collectorate Building here.

Local Government Section of the district administration arranged the
meeting with deputy commissioner Abdul Matin in the chair while deputy
director (DD) of local government section of the DC office Rokhsana Begum
moderated it.

The meeting was also addressed, among others, by Sadullapur UNO Nabi
Newaz, Damodarpur UP chairman Sajedul Islam Shwadhin, Monoharpur UP chairman
Mizanur Rahman Chutku and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.

Terming the grassroots institutions as the symbol of hopes and
aspirations of the rural people, the speakers said the nation could not be
reached to its cherished goal of success by keeping the grassroots
institutions neglected.

DC Abdul Matin said the government had put maximum emphasis for
empowering the local government body so that it could be turned into
centering point of all development work and public service providers at grass
root level.

Mentioning the LGSP-3 as gigantic project of the government the DC
sought whole hearted cooperation of all the concerned and urged them to work
sincerely from their respective position to make the project a grand success
in the district.

Earlier, a presentation on the project and its ongoing development works
in 82 unions under seven upazilas of the district in the function through
multimedia projector.

District level officials, upazila chairmen, union parishad chairmen, and
journalists took part in the function.
