Ex-AL lawmaker Fazilatunnesa Bappy laid to rest

DHAKA, Jan 2, 2020 (BSS) – Former lawmaker of Awami League from reserved seat Advocate Fazilatunnesa Bappy was laid to eternal rest at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard here this evening.

She breathed her last around 8am today at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital at the age of 49.

She is survived her mother and husband.

On December 27, she was admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia and respiratory ailments. Later, she was shifted to the ICU in the morning as her condition deteriorated.

Her first namaz-e-janaza was held at Japan Garden City and second one at 3pm at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

On behalf of the President, his military secretary placed wreaths on the coffin of Fazilatunnesa Bappy.

Later, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to Fazilatunnesa Bappy by placing wreaths on her coffin. Later, the premier stood in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Fazilatunnesa Bappy.

Later accompanied by senior party leaders, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of AL, placed wreaths on the coffin on behalf of the party.

Besides, JS Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mian placed wreaths on the coffin of the deceased.

On behalf of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Raushan Ershad, Jatiya Party lawmaker Fakhrul Imam placed wreaths on the coffin. JS Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury also placed wreaths on her coffin.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, Deputy Water Resources Minister AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, JS Whip Iqbalur Rahim and AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif joined the namaz-e-janaza. Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim read out the short biography of Bappy.

Later, a munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed soul. Her third namaz-e-janaza was held on the premises of the Supreme Court.

Born on December 31 in 1970, Fazilatunnesa Bappy was elected as MP in the 9th and 10th parliament for reserved seat from Awami League. She was also an International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor and an Assistant Attorney General of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

She was active in Awami League politics since her student life.
