Rahmatganj send Mohammedan packing

DHAKA, Jan 2, 2020 (BSS) – Rahmatganj Muslim and Friends Society stormed into final of the TVS Federation Cup Football beating Mohammedan Sorting Club Limited by a solitary goal in the first semifinal held on Thursday at Bangabandhu National Stadium.

The day’s win for Traditional Old Dhaka outfit Rahmatganj means Federation Cup will get a new champion either Rahmatganj or the winner from Bangladesh Police Football Club or Bashundhara Kings tie.

Mohammedan was the only team left in this meet who had won Federation Cup earlier. Abahani
Limited, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra, Brothers Union Club and
Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra- the previous winners made their exit before the
semifinal of the competition.

But with the day’s defeat Mohammedan’s hoped of clinching the title crumbled.

After the ten years, the traditional black and white Motijheel outfit had a good chance to move to the final following their crushing victory over Chattogram Abahani Limited in the quarterfinal, but they totally failed to cross the Rahmatganj hurdle on the day as the old Dhaka outfit showed excellent football on the ground.

In the day’s match, Uzbek forward Turaev Akobir scored the all- important goal for Rahmatganj in the 16th minute with a brilliant header form vantage position utilizing a cross from Shahedul Alam from right wing.

After the resumption, Mohammedan tried hard to stage a fight back in the match creating some scoring chances but they failed to score any in front of Rahmatganj’s packed defence.

Rahmatganj will now play the final against second semifinal winners either Bashundhara Kings or Bangladesh Police Football Club slated for Sunday (January 5) at the same venue.

Earlier, the traditional old Dhaka outfit Rahmatganj Muslim and Friends Society booked their spot of semifinal by beating Dhaka Abahani Limited by 4-3 goals in penalty shootout in the first quarterfinal while Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited confirmed the last four berth defeating Chattogram Abahani Limited by 2-0 goals in the second quarterfinal.

Friday’s second semifinal: Bashundhara Kings vs Bangladesh Police Football Club (4 pm).
