DHAKA, June 7, 2018 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina this morning paid
rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on
the occasion of the historic Six-Point Demand Day.
She paid the homage by placing a wreath at the portrait of the Father of
the Nation in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the city.
After laying the wreath, the prime minister stood in solemn silence for
some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the
architect of independence.
Flanked by senior Awami League leaders, Sheikh Hasina placed another
wreath at Bangabandhu’s portrait as the party chief.
AL Advisory Council Members Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and Mozaffar
Hossain Paltu, Presidium Members Faruk Khan and Dr Abdur Razzaque, General
Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Organizing
Secretaries Ahmad Hossain and Enamul Haque Shamim and Office Secretary Abdus
Sobhan Golap were present on the occasion, among others.
Later, associate bodies of Bangladesh Awami League including Dhaka city AL,
Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sramik League, Krishak League, Mohila Awami
League and Swechchhasebak League placed wreaths at the portrait of
Bangabandhu marking the historic occasion.
On this day in 1966, Bangabandhu launched a massive movement against the
misrule of the Pakistanis on the basis of the Six- Point Demand, the Magna
Carta of the Bangalees demanding autonomy for the then East Pakistan.
The Awami League (AL) under the charismatic leadership of Bangabandhu
called for a day-long hartal on June 7 in 1966 throughout East Pakistan
pressing the demand for autonomy to end the exploitation, deprivation,
subjugation and tyranny of the then central government of Pakistan on the
people here.
Eleven people, including Manu Mian, Shafique and Shamsul Haque, were
gunned down by the police and paramilitary EPR on June 7, 1966 in Dhaka,
Tongi and Narayanganj during a hartal called for the release of Bangabandhu
and other leaders detained for launching the Six-Point Movement against the
then barbaric ruling clique.
Bangabandhu launched his historic six-point political and economic
programme in Lahore on February 5 in 1966, aiming at attaining greater
autonomy for the then East Pakistan against the backdrop of exploitation and
discrimination by the then Pakistani rulers.
