No security threat on 31st night: Kamal

DHAKA, Dec 30, 2019 (BSS) – There is no specific threat centering
tomorrow’s 31st night to be celebrated across the country on December 31,
said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

“However, special security measures have been taken in the country for
peaceful celebration of the night,” he said this while addressing the Annual
General Meeting (AGM) of Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) as
the chief guest in city.

Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Dr Benazir Ahmed
addressed the AGM as special guest while CRAB President Abul Khair presided
over it.

Among others, former CRAB presidents Modhusudan Mandol, Abul Hossian,
Fakhrul Alam Kanchan, Pervez Khan, Khairuzzaman Kamal, Isharraf Hossain Isha,
CRAB Secretary Dipu Sarwar, DRU President Rafiqul Islam Azad also spoke in
the meeting, which was moderated by Organizing Secretary of CRAB Rashed
Nizam.

The home minister has sounded a note of warning that no musical events
will be allowed in open places on the occasion of 31st night celebration, he
said, adding, “Our law enforcement agencies have remained alert to face any
situation.”

Law enforcement agencies have taken stringent security measures so that
New Year celebration can take place peacefully, he said. The home minister
said, “Police can face any kind of challenges as they are now more capable
and efficient.”

“The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working
relentlessly with a firm resolve to establish a crime and militancy-free
society,” the home minister said.

Kamal said the government has banned musical activities including
fireworks in the open sky after 6pm from December 31 to January 1. Besides,
all bars will remain closed at night from December 30 to January 1 till 6 pm.

Besides, carrying all kinds of arms will also be prohibited during the
time and stern action will be taken if anyone tries to create anarchy
centering the December 31 night, he added.

Addressing the AGM, RAB DG Dr Benazir Ahmed said RAB members will also
patrol in the city’s important areas moreover, security measures will be
intensified in the diplomatic areas in the city including Baridhara and
Gulshan on the occasion of 31st December.

“We are working by analyzing the security measures on 31st night and the
eve of New Year. RAB members will ensure security for peaceful celebration of
the night but none will be allowed to cross limits,” he said.

Dr Benazir urged all, specially the journalists’ community to remain alert
about rumours or fake news on social media.

Referring to militancy and terrorism, he urged Islamic or religious
scholars to elaborately discuss about Islam and its principles because Islam
does not allow killing of any people.

As per security measures on December 31 night, additional members of law
enforcement agencies including intelligence agency and RAB members will be
deployed on the 31st night.

The movement of all vehicles (except vehicles carrying sticker) has been
restricted on the Dhaka University premises on December 31. The RAB members
will also patrol in the city’s important areas.

Following the ‘zero tolerance policy’ against militancy and terrorism, the
law enforcing agencies are on high alert and vigilant to deal with the
extremists and militants with an iron hand.
