JS body for taking steps to prevent expatriate women’s torture

DHAKA, Dec 22, 2019 (BSS) – Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Ministry today suggested taking necessary steps to prevent torture of expatriate women who are working abroad as domestic workers.

The committee made the recommendation at its ninth meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee chairman Muhammad Faruk Khan in the chair, said an official handout.

Committee members Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, Golam Faruk Khandker Prince, Nahim Razzaq and Kazi Nabil Ahmed attended the meeting.

The committee members decided to discuss with the Speaker about holding a joint meeting among parliamentary standing committees on ministries of home, foreign affairs and expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment regarding allegations on domestic violence against Bangladeshi overseas workers.

The committee sought a speedy solution of hand-written visas to foreign missions which are being issued for technical reasons.

During the meeting, they also sought cooperation of the concern ministry for the visit to Cambodia, one of the ASEAN member states, to discuss Rohingya issue.

The committee members presented a report on hearing on Gambia’s case over Rohingya genocide with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague this month.

Progress of the activities taken by the Foreign Ministry to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also discussed in the meeting.

Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Senior Secretary and other senior officials concerned of the ministry and Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were present in the meeting.
