Hasan hopes BNP to take lesson from AL council
DHAKA, Dec 22, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister and newly elected Joint General Secretary of Awami League Dr Hasan Mahmud today expressed his optimism that BNP will take lesson from the national council of the ruling party and come out from criminalization of politics.
He said this while replying to a question of journalists after visiting ailing veteran actor ATM Shamsuzzaman at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital’s Cabin Block here.
Asked about BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s comment that AL council lacks practice of democracy, Dr Hasan said national council of AL is not only a milestone in politics but also in national life.
Referring to 1966 national council of AL where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected the party president, he said the council’s introductory song was “Amar Sonar Bangla, Ami Tomai Bhalobashi” which subsequently became the national anthem of the independent Bangladesh.
The newly elected AL joint general secretary said after the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, BNP founder Ziaur Rahman criminalized and commercialized the politics, later HM Ershad kept up the trend and Begum Khaleda Zia took it at its peak.
On the other hand, the AL freed politics from criminalization, he added.
Noting BNP has many things to learn from the AL council, Dr Hasan said AL holds its councils regularly but “does BNP hold council?”
He expressed suspicion that even Mirza Fakhrul Islam could not say that how many advisers Begum Khaleda Zia has.
“Our every council has a declaration and this council has too. There are future directives in the declaration about our targets where we want to reach the nation. But there is no such practice in BNP. So they do not know. If Mr Fakhrul wants I can send him a copy of our declaration” he said.
Dr Hasan also thanked BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for congratulating the new committee of the AL.
Replying to a question, he said AL council means transfusing of combined blood of youths and experienced politicians and this council also kept it up.
There is no such thing that bringing change in committee is must, he said adding the party president can keep those, who performed well and did better works, to continue the consistency.
Before talking to journalists, the information minister talked to the ailing actor, spent some time beside his bed and enquired about his physical condition.
The minister informed Shamsuzzaman that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent him (minister) to enquire about the celebrated actor’s treatment.
Dr Hasan requested the physicians to give special attention to treatment of Shamsuzzaman. The minister also talked to the actor’s daughter Koyel Zaman.
Replying to another question of reporters at the hospital, Dr Hasan said the government had given financial assistance for the treatment of the actor earlier and it will stand beside him in future as well.
He said the government will do everything for the treatment of legendary actor Shamsuzzaman who has been suffering for ailments for long.
Singer Md Rafiqul Islam, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote General Secretary Arun Sarker Rana, actress Tarin Jahan and BSMMU Assistant Director Dr Pabitra Debnath were present on the occasion.
Renowned actor ATM Shamsuzzaman was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015.
He was given life time achievement award for his role in film industry on December 8 last. He won National Film Awards for five times.
