Aman rice harvesting gets momentum in Khulna

KHULNA, Dec 22, 2019 (BSS) – The Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) rice harvesting
is on in full-swing as the farmers are expecting a bumper output with getting
fair price in the district this season.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) officials here today said
farmers have already harvested Aman rice from 42,265 hectares of land out of
total cultivated 91,880 hectares of land till Saturday.

At least 1.29-lakh metric tons of clean T-Aman rice were got from the
harvested paddy with a yield rate of 4.3 metric tonnes per hectare of land,
they said.

DAE Deputy Director Agriculturist Pankaj Kanti Mojumder said a target of
producing 2.40-lakh metric tonnes of clean T-Aman rice was fixed from 92,807
hectares of land this season.

He said, but, the farmers finally cultivated T-Aman paddy on over 91,880
hectares of land, less 927 hectares against the fixed target of farming on
over 92,807 hectares of land in nine upazilas and metropolitan areas of the
district.

Some 6,650 metric tons of Aman rice on some 2500 hectares of land were
destroyed by the severe cyclonic storm bulbul hit on November 9 and 10 in
Khulna, he said.

The official said farmers are hopeful of achieving a bumper production of
T-Aman rice this season as its harvest continues amid favourable climate
conditions with excellent yield rate.

“After completing harvest of the short duration varieties of T-Aman rice,
farmers started sowing seeds of early varieties of potato, winter vegetables
and other Rabi crops now on the same land,” he added.
