Govt implementing massive programmes to achieve SDGs: Azad

RAJSHAHI, Dec 18, 2019 (BSS) – Principal Coordinator on Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Abul
Kalam Azad today said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has been
implementing gigantic programmes with an aim to achieving Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Public and private sector’s development entities and other stakeholders
have been engaged in the SDGs implementation process to this end, he said.

He was addressing the inaugural function of a two-day conference on SDGs
at Senate Building of Rajshahi University (RU) here as the chief guest.

RU’s statistics department is hosting the seventh international conference
on ‘Data Science and SDGs: Challenges, Opportunities and Realities’.

The two-day conference includes two keynote presentations, five plenary
sessions, meeting with invited guest and presenting 18 contributory papers.

Major focus areas of the conference are statistical inference, inference in
stochastic processes, statistical computing, biostatistics, reliability,
survival analysis and industrial statistics.

Besides, a poster session is being held in the conference with setting up
28 stalls showcasing its messages.

Chaired by RU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Abdus Sobhan, the function was
addressed by Statistics and Informatics Division’s Secretary of Planning
Commission Saurendra Nath Chakrabhartty, RU Pro-VCs Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha
and Prof Chowdhury Zakaria as special guests.

Convener of the conference Prof Sayedur Rahman welcomed the participants.

Abul Kalam Azad said SDGs are of essence to achieve a better and more
sustainable future for all, adding its key commitment is “no one will be left
behind”.

Mentioning that preparing of proper database is required to attain SDGs, he
said government, policy makers and officials can take proper plans and
implementation strategies to achieve SDGs within stipulated time as accurate
and reliable database are made.

He, however, said the conference will serve as an excellent platform for
the exchange of scientific knowledge on the latest developments and emerging
challenges, opportunities and realities in the field of data science.

The event is an excellent opportunity to discuss how we can achieve all the
17 SDGs and 169 targets in a coherent manner, he added.

Azad told the meeting that all-out efforts have been adopted to spearhead
the SDGs messages to the grassroots level so that they can contribute to the
implementation process.
