International Migrants Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Dec 17, 2019 (BSS) – The International Migrants Day-2019 will be
observed tomorrow in the country in a befitting manner as elsewhere across
the globe.

On December 4, 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the
large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed December 18
as the International Migrants Day.

On that day in 1990, the UN assembly adopted the International
Convention on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and members
of their families.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today gave
separate messages greeting Bangladeshi migrants in different parts of the
world on the occasion of the International Migrants Day.

To mark the day, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas
Employment has chalked out various programmes like other countries of the
world.

The theme of the day in Bangladesh has been set as ‘Dakkho Hoye Bidesh
Gele, Artho Samman Dui-e Mele”.

To mark the day, a colorful procession will be brought out from Manik
Miah Avenue at 8am tomorrow.

A daylong programme will be arranged at the Bangabandhu International
Conference Center on December 19 (Thursday) to mark the day.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the function as the
chief guest at 10am on that day.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad will
chair the first session of the programme while Chairman of Parliamentary
Standing Committee on Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Barrister
Anisul Islam Mahmud, Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting
Agencies (BAIRA) President Benjir Ahmed, MP and International Organization
for Migration (IOM) Bangladesh Mission Chief Giorgi Gigauri will attend it as
special guests.

The programmes of the migrants day will include awarding of commercial
important persons status to 42 non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) of 14
countries in three categories, inauguration of life insurance programme for
intending workers who will go abroad, scholarship giving to meritorious
children of expatriate workers and immigration fair and cultural function.
