Precise data key to attain SDGs: Experts

RANGPUR, Dec 17, 2019 (BSS) – Experts and academics at
a day-long consultation on ‘SDG Tracker- Features and
Demand Analysis’ here today said accurate and reliable
data are imperative to attain the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).

They viewed this at the event jointly organised by Dr.
Wazed Research and Training Institute (DWRTI) of Begum
Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) and a-2i Programme of
the ICT Division at a city hotel.

Presided over by Vice-chancellor of BRUR Professor Dr.
Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, government officials, civil
society members, teachers, students, politicians,
journalists and representatives of socio-cultural
organisations participated in the event.

Member of the Board of Governors of DWTRI and
Associate Professor of the Department of Peace and
Conflict Studies of Dhaka University Dr. Saber Ahmed
Chowdhury delivered a welcome speech highlighting the
goals and objectives of the event.

Head of Results Management and Data of a-2i Programme
of the ICT Division Dr. Ramiz Uddin delivered keynote
presentation on SDGs and SDG Tracker and narrated
expectations from participants in the consultation.

“The most important issues for attaining the SDGs are
to prepare accurate and reliable database needed for the
government, policy makers and officials for preparing
proper plans and implementation of those toward the
direction,” Ramiz said.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim
Mahmud, Registrar of BRUR Col. (Retd) Abu Hena Mustafa
Kamal, its Director of the Institutional Quality
Assurance Cell (IQAC) Professor Dr. Md. Nazmul Haque
addressed as honourable guests.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts of BRUR Professor Dr.
Sarifa Salowa Dina, its Director of Finance and Accounts
Professor Dr. RM Hafizur Rahman and Head of the
Department of Bengali Professor Dr. Parimal Chandra
Barman were present.

The Vice-chancellor said Bangladesh has already
achieved admirable progress in the education sector on
its way to achieving ambitious goals and targets of the
SDGs as announced by the United Nations.

He highlighted various initiatives and plans of BRUR
for improving the quality of education, research and
other activities to achieve the SDGs.

“It will be easier to achieve the SDGs in future if
advancement of Rangpur region in all indexes could be
ensured,” he added.
