Victory Day celebrated in Khulna

KHULNA, Dec 16, 2019 (BSS) – The 49th Victory Day was celebrated here today by paying rich tributes to the martyrs along with persecuted women during the great Liberation War in 1971.

On this day in 1971, Pakistani military conceded defeat to the allied
forces and commanding officer of Pakistani forces general A A K Niazi
surrendered arms with all members of his forces, ending nine month-long
bloody war.

To mark the day, different government, semi-government and autonomous
bodies, educational institutions, political parties and professional
organisations observed different programmes.

Khulna district administration celebrated the day by placing wreaths at
the memorial erected for commemorating the martyrs killed in Gallyamari here
in the morning.

The day was heralded by a 31-gun salute at dawn at the Khulna Police Line
Ground.

Khulna divisional commissioner Dr Anwar Hossain Howlader hoisted the
national flag at Khulna District Stadium and took salute of the parade.

Khulna Shishu Academy organized an art and painting competitions for
children on the occasion.

A discussion and a reception accorded to the freedom fighters were held at
the conference room of the deputy commissioner office.

People from all walks of life placed wreaths at the Gallamary monument for
paying rich tributes to the martyrs on the day.

Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches and other
religious institutions, seeking divine blessings for the departed souls of
the martyrs and peace and progress of the country.

Improved diet was served to the inmates of all hospitals, orphanage
centers and jail to mark the day.

State-run Khulna Betar centre broadcast special programmes while the local
newspapers published special supplements.

Khulna city and district unit Awami League celebrated the day in befitting
manner.

The programmes include hoisting of national and party flag atop of party
offices, paying glowing tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman by placing wreath at his portrait, laying wreath at the
Gallamary martyrdom memorial.

A colourful victory rally was brought out by Awami League in the city that
paraded main streets and ended at the party office followed by a discussion
meeting.

Chaired by Khulna City Unit Awami League president and KCC Mayor Talukder
Abdul Khaleque, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Khulna district
unit AL president and Zila Parishad chairman Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, city
unit AL general secretary MDA Babul Rana and its district unit general
secretary advocate Sujit Adhikary.

Khulna University (KU), Khulna University and Engineering Technology
(KUET), Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ), Swadhinata
Sangbadik Forum, Khulna WASA, Khulna Zila Parishad, Khulna Sangskritik Unnyan
Parishad and 1971: Genocide and Torture Archive Museum as well as different
socio-cultural and political parties celebrated the victory day in befitting
manner.
