President pays rich tributes to martyrs on Victory Day

SAVAR, Dec 16, 2019 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid paid rich tributes
to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National
Martyrs’ Memorial (Jatiya Smriti Saudha) here early today, marking the 49th
Victory Day.

The head of the state placed the wreath at the altar of the National
Martyrs’ Memorial, with the rise of the sun at about 6:34 am.

After placing the wreath, the President stood there in solemn silence
for sometime as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of
the Great War of Liberation in 1971.

A smartly turned out contingent comprising Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh
Navy and Bangladesh Air Force personnel presented state salute on the
occasion when bugles played the last post.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, members of the cabinet,
advisers to the prime minister, members of the parliament (MPs), national
leaders, chiefs of the three services, diplomats, and high civil and military
officials were present on the occasion.

The nation is celebrating the 49th Victory Day today marking the most
precious day when the country was liberated from the Pakistani occupation
forces after a nine-month War of Liberation.

Forty-eight years back on December 16 in 1971, Bangladesh was born as an
independent country under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the supreme sacrifice of three million martyrs and
the honour of two lakh women.
