Gaffar Chowdhury accuses Zia, Ershad of rehabilitating razakars

DHAKA, Dec 15, 2019 (BSS) – Eminent journalist and litterateur Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury today accused military dictators turned politicians Ziaur Rahman and Jatiya Party Chief HM Ershad of rehabilitating anti-liberation forces in politics noting that these elements lost their grip in power as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government is in power.

“They (Zia, Ershad) made these elements lawmakers and ministers,” he said addressing a discussion coinciding with the Victory Day celebrations under the auspices of Sampriti Bangladesh at the Jatiya Press Club (JPC).

Chowdhury appreciated the government for publishing lists of Razakars but feared that the anti-liberation forces could reemerge in the political landscape unless Sheikh Hasina remained in the helm of affairs.

“Militancy, terrorism and anarchy will sink the country in the absence of Sheikh Hasina,” he said.

He paid rich tributes to the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman saying the words “harmony, Bangabandhu and Bangli’s Victory” were directly related to “our lives”.

“He was a pure pious Muslim, but in his political life, he was an idealist and non-communal,” Chowdhury said.

On convicted fugitive Tarique Rahman, the litterateur said, “Only God knows how much money Tarique Zia has in London. He goes to night clubs and visits big shopping malls there”.

Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Information Murad Hasan said highest punitive measures will be taken against the Daily Sangram for publishing a report terming “a martyr” convicted war criminal and Jamaat leader Abdul Qader Mollah, who was executed in 2013 after completion of all legal procedures.

He said the Jamaat-e-Islami mouthpiece betrayed with the Liberation War, the country as well as the country’s people.

Sampriti Bangladesh President Pijush Bandyopadhyay presided over the discussion, addressed, among other, by former JPC President Shafiqur Rahman, MP, former justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, journalist Harun Habib and a martyr’s daughter Dr Nujhat Chowdhury.

Member secretary of the organization Dr Mamun Al Mahtab Swapnil conducted the discussion.
