Martyred Intellectuals’ Day observed in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Dec 14, 2019 (BSS) – The Martyred Intellectuals’ Day-2019 was
observed here today paying rich tribute to martyred intellectuals and
demanding completion of trial of the killers of martyred intellectuals and
all war criminals.

The divisional, district and police administrations, political parties,
socio-cultural and professional organisations and educational institutions
observed the day in a befitting manner with elaborate programmes.

The district and city units of Awami League (AL), its associate bodies,
JASOD, Workers’ Party, BSD, CPB, Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee (GDNC), Sector
Commanders Forum, Sommilito Sangskritik Jyote, Shilpokola Academy, Begum
Rokeya University, Carmichael College, Rangpur Medical College and other
institutions observed the day.

The observance began with placing wreaths at the ‘Shaheed Smriti
Stambha’ and Central Shaheed Minar, hoisting of black flag and national flag
at half-mast atop all public and private buildings since the morning.

The programs included wearing black badges, observance of one-minute
silence, lighting of candles, placing wreaths at mass graves, doa mahfil,
special munajats seeking divine blessings for departed souls of the martyred
intellectuals and discussions.

The district administration organised the main discussion, prize
distribution and doa mahfil at Town Hall auditorium and inaugurated a three-
day photo exhibition displaying photographs on the War of Liberation at
Public Library ground in the city.

Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam attended the main discussion as
the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan in the chair.

RpMP Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud, Additional Deputy Inspector General
for Rangpur Range Police Iqbal Hossain, District Council Chairman Advocate
Chhafia Khanom, Superintendent of Police Biplob Kumar Sarkar, Organising
Secretary of district AL Touhidur Rahman Tutul and President of district
Chhatra League Mehedee Hasan Rony addressed as special guests.

The district and city units of AL and its associate bodies observed the
day beginning with placing wreaths at portrait of Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman followed by other programs including
separate discussions at district and city AL offices. President of district
AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its General Secretary Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju,
Joint General Secretary Rosy Rahman, Organising Secretary Touhidur Rahman
Tutul, city AL President Shafiur Rahman Shafi, its General Secretary Tushar
Kanti Mandal, among others, addressed the discussion.

Besides, Rangpur unit of GDNC arranged candle-lit program and other
programs followed by a discussion on central Shaheed Minar premises this
evening.

President of Rangpur unit of GDNC Dr. Mofizul Islam Maantu presided over
the discussion moderated by its General Secretary Moazzem Hossain Lablu.

At the discussion, speakers said the Pakistani occupation army and their
collaborators Al-badars, Al-shams and razakars killed intellectuals and
worthy professionals from their houses on December 14 and assassinated them
with the intention of crippling the nation intellectually.
