Martyred Intellectuals Day being observed in Khulna

KHULNA, Dec 14, 2019 (BSS) – People from all walks of life here today
are observing the ‘Martyred Intellectuals Day’ paying rich tributes to the
intellectuals who were brutally killed by the Pakistan occupation forces and
their local collaborators at the fag-end of the country’s Liberation War in
1971.

The observance began through placing wreaths at the monuments of the
martyrs, hoisting of the black flags and national flag at half-mast atop all
public and private buildings.

The programmes also included wearing black badges, observance of one-
minute silence, lighting candles and offering special prayers seeking divine
blessings for departed souls of the martyred intellectuals and discussions.

Different political parties, including Awami League (AL) and its
associate bodies, JASOD, Workers Party, BSD, Communist Party, Sector
Commanders Forum, different educational institutions and other organisations
are observing the day.

Leaders as well as activists of different political and socio-cultural
organisations, government, non-government organisations and educational
institutions placed wreaths at (Gallamary) Martyred Memorial in the city in
the early hours of the day.

The day’s programme began with paying tributes by (Khulna Muktijoddha
Sangsad) at the memorial at zero hour.

Khulna district and city units of Awami League (AL) and its associate
bodies, Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jasad, CPB, Vice-Chancellors of Khulna
University (KU), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET),
Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Khulna District Administration, Khulna
Divisional Commissioner, Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists
(KUJ), Khulna Swadhinota Sangbadik Forum, among others, paid homage to the
great sons of the soil.

Khulna city and district units of Awami League (AL) organised a
discussion at the party office in the city marking the day where state
minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnuzan Sufian, MP, newly elected
Khulna City unit President and KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, General
Secretary MDA Babul Rana, District unit AL President and Zila Parishad
chairman Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, general secretary Adv. Sujit Kumar Adhikary,
among others, spoke.

Meanwhile, People from all walks of life including Freedom Fighters,
Dumuria Upazila Administration paid homage to the martyred of Chuknagar
Genocide on the May, 1971, at the martyrdom which built in memory of the
Chuknagar 10,000 martyred.
