Govt takes elaborate programmes to celebrate Victory Day

DHAKA, Dec 12, 2019 (BSS) – The government has drawn up elaborate programmes to celebrate the Victory Day-2019 on December 16, marking the most precious day when the country was liberated from the clutches of Pakistani occupation forces after a nine-month bloody War.

On December 16 in 1971, Bangladesh had emerged as an independent state under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will give separate messages on the eve of the Day.

The day will start with 31 gun salutes.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreath at the National Memorial at Savar immediate after the sunrise.

They will be followed by the freedom fighters and their family members led by liberation war minister, foreign diplomats, invited guests of allied force members of Liberation War, leaders of Awami League and different political and social organisations and people from all walks of life.

A colorful parade of combined forces and motorcade showcasing activities of different ministries will be held at the National Parade Square at the Tejgaon Old Airport at 10.30 am.

President Abdul Hamid will attend the programme as the chief guest. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will also attend it.

Besides, different socio-cultural and professional bodies and institutions including Bangla Academy, Shilpakala Academy, National Museum, Liberation War Museum and Bangladesh Shishu Academy will observe the day with elaborate programmes including drawing competition of children, essay and sports competitions and screening of documentaries on Liberation War.

The day is a public holiday.

The national flag will be hoisted atop government, semi-government and private offices as well as offices of autonomous bodies across the country.

Important buildings and establishments will be illuminated. Important roads and road-islands will be decorated with national flags and colourful festoons.

National dailies will bring out special supplements.

The state-owned and private televisions and radios will broadcast month-long special programmes highlighting the Liberation War. Different organisations will organise discussions and display Liberation War related documentaries.

Receptions will be hosted to freedom fighters and family members of martyrs at city, district and upazila levels. Memorial stamps will be published marking the Victory Day.

Special prayers will be offered in mosques and other places of worship, seeking eternal peace of the souls of martyrs of the Liberation War and peace, progress and prosperity of the country.

Improved diets will be served in jails, hospitals, orphanages, old-age home and other similar institutions across the country.

All children’s parks and museums will be kept open for all without ticket.

Bangladesh missions abroad will observe the day through different programmes.
