Rhodes to arrive for interview for Tigers’ new coach

DHAKA, June 5, 2018 (BSS) – English coach Steve Rhodes is set to arrive here this week to attend an interview for the head coach role of Bangladesh Tigers.

Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury confirmed the news to BSS on Tuesday.

Talking to BSS today Nizamuddin informed that “Steve Rhodes is in our one of the shortlist as a head coaches and he will give his presentation to the Board and if the Board finds everything okay then it will take the final decision regarding him,”

He said BCB have been already communicating with him and told him to be prepared to give during his presentation that what plans he has for the Bangladesh team for the 2019 World Cup and 2020 World T20.

The former England Wicket keeper featured in 11 Test and nine ODIs for his country and was a wicket-keeper batsman during his playing days.

The BCB CEO added that that the short-term consultant Gary Kirsten, who had been appointed to help the board find the right man for the job, had recommended his name after completing the internal audit last month.

Nizamuddin said they shared their tentative candidates list with Gary Kirsten. It is a joint effort as BCB’s shortlist is made up of Kirsten’s recommendations.

Among the currently available coaches, Rhodes is the most experienced. Also, the 2019 World Cup will be held in England which is another reason that we are looking at him.

The BCB’s search for the new head coach began in November last year when they first approached Tom Moody, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Andy Flower and Justin Langer but all five turned the offer down.

Then they had interviewed Pybus and Simmons but the BCB didn’t contact them back and both were soon appointed by Cricket West Indies and the Afghanistan Cricket Board respectively.

Then the BCB nearly confirmed Geoff Marsh and Farbrace before asking Kirsten to help them find a new coach in a tough market where T20 franchise assignments are turning out to be more attractive.
