Kamal for low-cost net connections in Asia-Pacific region

DHAKA, Dec 11, 2019 (BSS) – Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal today said that it would be possible to provide internet connections at lesser cost among the Asia and Pacific countries through utilizing the Asia-Pacific information super highway.

“It will be possible to give internet connections at lesser cost through fiber optic cable along the Trans-Asian Rail line among the Asia and Pacific countries,” he said.

The Finance Minister came up with the view when Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, UN Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), met him at his Economic Relations Division (ERD) office today, said a Finance Ministry press release.

Noting that ensuring inclusive internet would be an important component towards attaining the key targets of the SDGs like good health, qualitative education, innovation and smart city, Kamal said connecting with the Asia-Pacific information super highway by the ESCAP countries would be fruitful.

During the meeting, both the Finance Minister and the ESCAP executive secretary discussed on Asia-Pacific information super highway, increasing the skills of human resources, communication and expansion of trade.

In response, the ESCAP executive secretary expressed her firm resolve to work with Bangladesh in those areas.

Lauding highly the economic progress of Bangladesh under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina, Armida said the recent economic success of Bangladesh is really significant.

She also asserted that the ESCAP is pledge-bound to ensure sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region as well as will always remain beside Bangladesh in its graduation from the LDCs.
