RANGPUR, Dec 10, 2019 (BSS) – Academics at a discussion have stressed on
following ideal and conscience of Begum Rokeya to ensure female education,
equal rights and socio-political empowerment of women.
They viewed this at the discussion organised tonight on the second day
of the three-day observance programs of Rokeya Day-2019 at Begum Rokeya’s
birthplace village of Pairaband in Mithapukur upazila of the district.
Earlier in the morning, drawing, poem recitation, essay writing and
debate competitions for the students in different categories and screening of
documentary films were organised at Pairaband village.
Professor Dr Nazmul Haque of the Department of Bengali of Begum Rokeya
University attended the discussion as the chief guest with Mithapukur Upazila
Nirbahi Officer Mamun Bhuiyan in the chair.
Additional Police Commissioner (Circle D) of District Police Hafizur
Rahman and Deputy Director of Bangla Academy Abdullah-Al-Faruk addressed as
special guest.
Lecturer of Mahiganj Degree College Dr Nasima Akhter presented keynote
essay titled ‘Women thought in Rokeya’s Literature” as resource person.
Head of the Department of Islamic History and Cultural of Rangpur
Government Rokeya College Professor Dr Arefina Begum and General Secretary of
Begum Rokeya Smriti Sangsad and teacher Rafikul Islam Dual participated as
discussants.
Dr Arefina Begum discussed the ideal, social philosophy, conscience and
contribution of Rokeya in advancing the womenfolk for their equal rights to
eradicate gender disparity for smooth national advancement.
The speakers laid emphasis on following the ideal and teaching of Rokeya
in the present society to prevent discriminatory social attitude toward
women, repression and violence against them.
Terming Rokeya as a great social philosopher and human rights activist,
the chief guest said that her conscience still showing the right direction to
the modern society, generations and policy-makers.
“Rokeya was the first woman in this region to realise that without
ensuring education, equal rights and empowerment of women, a society cannot
achieve sustainable development,” he added.
