World Environment Day observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, June 5, 2018 (BSS)-Substantial and sustainable reduction of
plastic pollution can be the vital means of protecting water bodies and
environment as well from further degradation.

Currently, plastic pollution is being adjudged as a major threat to the
whole ecosystem. So, creating public awareness on the issue has become
indispensable.

The views were expressed at a post-rally discussion by some speakers who
urged all the government and non-government entities concerned to come
forward and work together to improve environment.

The Department of Environment (DoE) and the district administration
jointly organized the discussion today at Nanking Darbar Hall in the city to
mark the World Environment Day-2018. “Beat Plastic Pollution” was the main
theme of the day.

‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the theme for World Environment Day 2018, is a
call to come together to combat one of the great contemporary environmental
challenges.

The theme of World Environment Day 2018 invites everyone to consider how
to bring changes in daily lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic
pollution on natural places, wildlife and public health.

Chaired by Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader, the meeting was addressed,
among others, by commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman, director of
DoE Subol Bose Moni and its Deputy Director Mamunur Rashid, Superintendent of
Police Md Shahidullah and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md
Shalahuddin.

Nur-Ur-Rahman expressed concern over an increasing use of plastics for
packaging perishable foods. He said city corporations and municipalities
across the country are not yet ready to adopt the strategy of reduce, reuse
and recycle, a 3R strategy formulated by DoE.

He called for creating awareness among all concerned including the younger
generations to prevent environmental degradation that severely threatens
existence of the whole planet, its habitation and civilization.

Various government and non-government organizations including Brac,
volunteers and schoolboys and girls joined the rally and meeting.
