Prof Ajoy Roy passes away
DHAKA, Dec 9, 2019 (BSS) – Renowned educationist and one of the founders
of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Professor Ajoy Roy passed away at
a city hospital today.
Prof Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy, died at 12:36pm at the ICU
of BIRDEM Hospital at the age of 85, hospital sources said.
He had been suffering from various old-aged complications and undergoing
treatment at the hospital with fever and respiratory problem since November
25. He was shifted to ICU on November 27 as his health condition
deteriorated.
He was awarded with Ekushey Padak in physics in 2012.
As a founder of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Prof Roy played
important role in the movement for trial of war criminals. He was now one of
the advisers of the committee.
Born in Dinajpur on March 1, 1935, Prof Roy was in the forefront of
Liberation War and all democratic movements of the country.
He completed his school and college education in Dinajpur. After
completing M.Sc in 1957, Roy joined Cumilla Victoria College.
He taught physics in Dhaka University from 1959 and 2009. Roy obtained
PhD from Leeds University of England in 1966 and completed post doctorate
from the same university in 1967. He joined Dhaka University again. Prof
Roy’s articles were published in many local and foreign journals.
He was general secretary of Bangladesh Asiatic Society. He was president
of Sampriti March and vice-president of Bangladesh Itihas Parisad.
