‘Course on hostage negotiation to enhance police’s capacity’

DHAKA, Dec 5, 2019 (BSS) – Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)
M Shafiqul Islam today said the course on hostage negotiation will enhance the
capacity of the police personnel as well as the Special Weapons And Tactics
(SWAT).

“Among the extraordinary operations of police, hostage negotiation is an
uncommon assignment that police faces. The course will build their
capacity and transform our police force into an efficient one,” the DMP
commissioner said while distributing certificates among participants of the
course as the chief guest at Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit
(CTTC) office in the city.

The commissioner said training is necesssary for building up capacity on any subject
or issue, he said, adding, “So, we have to groom-up ourselves instead of passing leisure
time. As the world is changing, we have to face new challenges everyday.”

He expressed his gratitude to the Counter Terrorism Negotiation Team of the
United Kingdom (CTNT UK) for providing support for holding a 12-day-long hostage
negotiation course.

Additional Commissioner and Chief of CTTC Monirul Islam chaired the
function, which was also addressed, by CTNT UK Inspectors Ketty Martin, Mark
Brux and Drik Karow.

“This is the first time in Bangladesh that such type of course is being
held aimed at enhancing capacity of police to deal any unusual crime,” he
said.

Monirul said the hostage negotiation course will also help the SWAT, as it
opens a new window in solving criminal cases.

A total of 15 SWAT members took part in the course.
