SC adjourns Khaleda’s bail hearing in graft case till Dec 12

DHAKA, Dec 5, 2019 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today adjourned till December 12 the hearing on bail plea filed by BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

“BSMMU VC has informed me that some medical tests of Begum Khaleda Zia have been completed and some are yet to be done. So, we need some time,” Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said in today’s hearing.

“Let this matter appear in the list on December 12 in 2019, for hearing,” said a six-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, asking Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) vice chancellor to submit the report by December 11.

Meanwhile, right after apex court’s order, adjourning the bail hearing, counsels of Khaleda Zia along with pro-BNP lawyers started chanting slogans, creating a chaotic situation inside the courtroom.

At one stage, the judges were forced to leave the courtroom and went to their chambers amid mad shouting from those lawyers and people in black coats. Many of those, who were shouting and chanting slogans, were seen barring senior lawyers to leave the courtroom.

Terming this disorder as unprecedented, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said it’s an attempt to pressurize the Appellate Division, which is tantamount to contempt of court.

Supreme Court Bar Association president M Amin Uddin in his reaction to newsmen urged chief justice to take stern action against the culprits for the sake of upholding the image of judiciary.

Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad, a platform for pro-liberation lawyers, member secretary Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said BNP brought outsiders wearing lawyers’ gown to create chaos and demanded to take action against them.

“General lawyers would prevent this evil attempt of BNP to tarnish the image of judiciary,” Taposh added.

The apex court on November 28 asked BSMMU authorities to submit the report by today to pass order on Khaleda’s bail plea.

Earlier the High Court scrapped the same plea, prompting Khaleda’s counsels to file an appeal against that on November 14.
