Workshop on early childhood intervention in Bangladesh held

KHULNA, Dec 3, 2019 (BSS) – A regional level workshop on ‘Early Childhood Intervention and Parental Involvement in Bangladesh’ was held at a hotel here yesterday based-on a research project conducted in Bangladesh over the last four years in five upazilas of Khulna and Satkhira.

The upazilas are Dumuria, Paikgacha, Koyra of Khulna and Assasuni and Tala of Satkhira.

Global Development & Research Initiative Foundation (GDRI), an NGO, organized the workshop while Khulna Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Ziaur Rahman attended the workshop as the chief guest.

Chairman of GDRI Mohammad Rafiqul Islam presided over the workshop while, Assistant District Primary Education Officer Md. Abdullah Al Mamun was present at the occasion as the special guest.

Prof of Sociology at Khulna University Dr. Abdul Jabbar, was present at the event as a discussant while vice chairman of GDRI Rafiqul Islam delivered the welcome speech. Associate Professor of Economics of Khulna University Firoz Alam conducted the event.

Prof of Economics and Director of the Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability (CDES) at Monash University in Australia Dr. Asad Islam who conducted this large scale randomized control trial (RCT) based study on ‘Early Childhood Interventions in Bangladesh’ addressed as the key speaker at the workshop.

In this study, Prof. Asad observed that investing in early childhood and parenting programs at an early age positively influence their cognitive as well as non-cognitive skills.

Under this research, he covered more than 8,000 children age from 3 to 5 years based on different treatment. This research was conducted on three treatments such as schooling in 40 villages, home visit in 60 villages and home visit along with schooling in 40 villages and 83 villages were under control group.
