3 jailed for life over deaths of Razib, Dia in road crash
DHAKA, Dec 01, 2019 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today sentenced three people to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the deaths of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College students Abdul Karim Razib and Dia Khanam Mim in a road accident in 2018.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Imrul Qayes passed the judgement, sentencing bus drivers of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan Masum Billah and Jubayer Sumon and helper Kaji Asad to life imprisonment. The court also fined the convicts Taka 50 thousand each, to suffer six months imprisonment more in default.
The court acquitted bus owner Jahangir Alam and another helper Enayet Hossain of the charges.
“We are satisfied with this judgement and it is a message to all that none can get away after causing harm to life and property by reckless driving,” public prosecutor Abdullah Abu told BSS.
Of the three convicts, Asad is yet to be arrested while the other two were present during the pronouncement of the judgement.
Earlier, police produced four accused Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan owner Jahangir Alam, drivers Masum Billah and Jubayer Sumon and helper Enayet Hossain, before the court from jail marking the judgement.
The court on November 14, fixed December 1 to pass the verdict as both defence and the prosecution concluded their arguments in the case on that day.
The court, during its proceedings, examined 37 witnesses, including investigation officer (IO) Qazi Shariful Islam, out of the total 41 witnesses.
On July 29, 2018, two students – Razib and Dia- of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College were run over during a mad race between three buses of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan on Dhaka’s Airport Road.
Agitated people torched the two buses. The incident triggered a widespread protest by the students demanding justice for their fellows and road safety.
Dia’s father Jahangir Hossain Fakir filed the case with Cantonment Police Station to this end.
The IO and detective branch of police inspector Qazi Shariful Islam on September 6, 2018, filed the charge sheet in the case against six, Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan owners Jahangir Alam and Shahadat Hossain, drivers of two killer buses Masum Billah and Jubayer Sumon and helpers Enayet Hossain and Kazi Asad.
According to the case documents, two Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan drivers Jubayer and Sohag blocked the road on the slope of Zillur Rahman Flyover with their buses so that no other buses can cross them and take passengers.
To overtake them, another bus driven by Masum Billah, ran over 14-15 students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, who were standing on the bus stop, killing Razib and Dia on the spot.
