Israel dispatches emergency aid to Guatemala after volcano

JERUSALEM, June 4, 2018 (BSS/AFP) – Israel said on Monday it was sending
emergency aid worth $10,000 to Guatemala, where a volcano erupted killing at
least 25 people.

Foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said on Twitter they money will
be used to buy emergency equipment, namely medication, food, blankets.

Israel will coordinate further needs with Guatemalan authorities, he said.

Guatemala was one of the few countries to side with the United States after
President Donald Trump’s December recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s
capital, breaking with decades of US diplomacy and international consensus.

On May 16, Guatemala opened its new embassy in Jerusalem, just two days
after the US. Since then Paraguay has also followed suit.

Guatemala’s 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) Fuego volcano, located 35 kilometres
southwest of the capital, erupted on Sunday, killing at least 25 people and
forcing the evacuation of more than 3,000 people.
