Hanif worked for building ‘Sonar Bangla’ following Bangabandhu’s ideology: Khokon

DHAKA, Nov 28, 2019 (BSS) – Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor
Sayeed Khokon today said the first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation
Mohammad Hanif had worked for building ‘Sonar Bangla’ following the ideology
of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“The veteran freedom fighter and former president of Dhaka City Awami
League Mohammad Hanif did politics following the ideology of Father of the
Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and worked for materializing
Bangabandhu’s dream of transforming the country into ‘Sonar-Bangla’,” he
said.

He stated this while addressing a memorial meeting and a Doa-mahfil as the
chief guest in front of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) premises here,
marking the 13th death anniversary of Mayor Mohammad Hanif.

DSCC organised the meeting and the Doa-mahfil with DSCC chief executive
officer Shah Md Imdadul Huq in the chair.

The mayor said his father (Hanif) protected the Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina with the help of other AL leaders by making human shield during the
grenade attack on August 21, 2004.

Hanif suffered critical splinter injuries from the August 21, 2004 grenade
attack and later died on November 28, 2006, he added.

Hanif, also a close associate of Bangabandhu, had played an important role
by setting up Janatar Mancha (people’s stage) to oust BNP government in 1996,
Khokon continued.

Lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim was present on the occasion while Dhaka City
South unit of AL president Abul Hasnat and general secretary Shahe Alam Murad
and its vice-presidents Abu Ahmed Mannafi and Humayun Kabir also spoke on the
occasion.
