Int’l Female Oppression Prevention Fortnight celebrated in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Nov 28, 2019 (BSS) – The International Female Oppression
Prevention Fortnight was celebrated in the district with a call to stop
female and child oppression, including sexual violence.

Marking the fortnight, Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a local non-government
organization, arranged an assembly on the premises of Bijoy Stambha of the
town here on Wednesday under Youth and Social Cohesion project funded by
Manusher Jonno Foundation and UKAID.

Executive chief of GUK Abdus Salam, Jahurul Kaiyum, Saiful Alam Saka,
Mahfuza Akter Parul, Majeda Khatun, Anjali Devi, Afroza Luna and Joya Prosad
addressed the function, among others.

The speakers in their speech said women and children are largely becoming
victims of sexual violence and rape as they are the most vulnerable group in
the society.

They stressed to build social movement against domestic, sexual violence
and rape to bring down the number of cases.

They also urged all the stake holders of the society to come forward with
positive attitude to eliminate all sorts of female oppression and sexual
harassment to build a peaceful society.

Later, a grand rally was brought out in the district town. Members of Amrai
Pari Zila Paribarik Nirjatan Protirodh Jote, District Initiative Group,
Karmajibi Nari, Nari Jote, Durbar Network, Jalbayu Parishad, Youth Group and
other human rights groups participated in the assemble and in the rally.

Apart from it, hundreds of teachers and students of 42 academic
institutions of the district took oath against sexual violence marking the
fortnight, sources said.
