Holey Artisan verdict a rare example: CTTC chief

DHAKA, Nov 27, 2019 (BSS) – Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) M Manirul Islam today termed the verdict of the Holey Artisan murder case as a rare example in the world as the verdict of the sensational murder case has been given within the shortest possible time.

“It is a rare example in the world to bring such type of criminals under book as the holey artisan sensational murder case verdict has set an example by pronouncing such order within short time,” said Manirul also the head of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC), in a media briefing at DMP media center here.

Describing the investigation of the case as very important, the DMP official said the CTTC unit was newly founded at that time when the incident took place, adding that the unit had started the investigation into the case with utmost sincerity and dedication.

Seven men were sentenced to death on Wednesday for their roles in the Holey Artisan caf’ attack, the deadliest terror attack in Bangladesh’s history that claimed the lives of 22 people, including 17 foreigners.

On July 1, 2016, armed terrorists barged into the upscale restaurant in the heart of the diplomatic quarter and unleashed an unprecedented carnage that shook the nation.

Twenty-two people, including nine Italians, seven Japanese, an Indian, a Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis along with two police officers – were killed before commandoes stormed the caf‚ and neutralised the extremists.

Thirteen others, who were identified to be behind the attack, were killed during raids at various times.

Police pressed charges against eight people in the case on July 23, 2018. The tribunal framed charges against them on November 26. On December 3 last year, the trial began with the deposition of witnesses. On November 17 last, the tribunal set November 27 for delivering its verdict.
