BNP activists vandalize vehicles in front of HC

DHAKA, Nov 26, 2019 (BSS) – BNP leaders and activists today locked into a clash with police and vandalized a number of vehicles as they staged a demonstration in front of the High Court (HC) seeking party chief Khaleda Zia’s release from jail.

The clash took place around 1 pm when BNP men attacked the police personnel with branches of trees and sticks, said Md Sajjadur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Earlier, BNP men informed the police that they will go beside the Kadam Fountain adjacent to the HC after a programme at the Jatiya Press Club here.

But they took position in front of the HC and started demonstration demanding release of BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia while some leaders and activists also joined with them coming out of the HC, the DC said, adding that some of them took position on the roads triggering a huge gridlock in the area.

At first, police urged the BNP men to withdraw the barricade, but they did not pay any heed to the police rather they threw brickbats targeting police, he added.

At one stage, police charged batons and dispersed them, he said.

BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman and Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad were among the protesters.
