Flood affected farmers get OFSP vines in Fulchhari

GAIBANDHA, Nov 26, 2019 (BSS) – A number of flood affected farmers of
Urya union under Fulchhari upazila of the district got vines of orange-
fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) from International Potato Center (CIP) Bangladesh
on Monday free of cost.

According to sources a devastating flood hit Fulchhari here this year
and damaged the standing crops of the people living on the Brahmaputra river
basin making them more worried about their food security.

To recover the losses caused by the flood, CIP Bangladesh stood beside
them and distributed vines of OFSP to them.

A simple function was also held on the premises of Dariarvita Govt.
Primary School of the union yesterday afternoon under the project of
Development and Delivery of Biofortified Crops at Scale funded by the
Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland acting
through the Department for International Development (DFID).

The implementing agency for the project CIP Bangladesh in partnership
with a local non-government organization Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) arranged
the function.

Country programme coordinator of CIP Bangladesh Dr. Debashis Chanda
addressed the function as the chief guest and specialist, Agricultural and
Research and Development of CIP Bangladesh Monowar Hossain was present as the
special guest.

They urged the beneficiary farmers to farm the vines of OFSP on their
land systematically and nurse it properly to get desired output against the
crop and to meet the demand of nutrition as well.

Later, they formally distributed 34,800 pieces of BARI released OFSP
vines to 29 selected farmers of the area free of cost. Each of them got 1200
pieces of vine from the organizations.

Earlier, the farmers were also imparted need base training with
practical one on the farming of OFSP on the land.

Project coordinator Md. Mahmudul Hasan Rumen and field facilitator of
GUK Rashedul Islam Nayan conducted the training as the facilitators.

Executive chief of GUK Abdus Salam told the BSS earlier, 1, 60, 800
pieces of vine were also distributed to 134 flood affected farmers of
Ratanpur, Moddho Urya and Yugirvita areas of the union this month.

Fertilizers and technological supports would be provided free of cost to
the beneficiary farmers to farm the OFSP on their land successfully, he
concluded.
