Gender equality stressed for stopping violence against women

RANGPUR, Nov 25, 2019 (BSS) – Discussants at a human chain today laid
emphasis on establishing gender equality with comprehensive efforts of all to
prevent all sorts of repressions on women to attain the sustainable
development goals (SDGs).

They expressed the opinion in the programme arranged in observance of
the International Women Repression Prevention Fortnight- 2019 at Katchari
Bazar zero point in the city.

The district administration in association with the Department of Women
Affairs and a number of human rights, professional and women rights
organisations organised the event.

Earlier, women activists, government and NGO officials and employees,
human rights and socio-cultural activists, professionals, teachers and
students brought out a procession that paraded different streets of city.

Additional District Magistrate Md. Arafat Rahman addressed the programme
as the chief guest with Deputy Director of the Department of Women Affairs
Kawser Pervin in the chair.

Women activists, including President of Rangpur city Mohila Awami League
Mamtaz Begum, Mosfeka Razzaque, Marhamatun Nesa, Monjushree Saha, Somse Ara
Bilkis, Morsheda Banu, Shahina Sultana, Tasmin Afroz, among others, addressed
the event.

The chief guest said the present government has taken massive steps to
ensure equal rights of women and their participations in all development and
socio-political activities to attain the SDGs by 2030.

Mosfeka Razzaque said there is no alternative to bringing an end to
gender disparity to ensure their equal rights, dignity and honour of women at
every sphere in the society for attaining the SDGs.

Other speakers put importance on engaging comprehensive efforts of all
stakeholders, including GO-NGOs, to eliminate repression and violence against
women.

They said both males and females should work shoulder-to-shoulder with a
changed mindset for eliminating all types of repressions on women for
flourishing their leadership to maintain the current pace of progress to
build a developed and peaceful country.
