Govt to build earthquake resilience infrastructure: Dr Enam

DHAKA, Nov 24, 2019 (BSS) – As Bangladesh is faced with high risk of earthquake due to its geographical location, the government is embarking on constructing earthquake resilient infrastructures with supports from Japan.

Bangladesh will seek supports, including financial and technical assistance, of Japanese government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said.

He was addressing a seminar titled ‘Implantation of Sendai Framework to Reduce Disaster Risk’ at the Hotel InterContinental here today, said a press release.

National Resilience Programme of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry organized the seminar with the ministry’s Senior Secretary Md Shah Kamal in the chair.

Noting that it will be difficult for Bangladesh to overcome any possible crisis if it is created in the country due to moderate or severe earthquake, Dr Enam said there is no alternative to build earthquake resilient infrastructures.

“The government is working to present an earthquake disaster resilient country to the future generation like Japan,” he said.

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Chairman AB Tajul Islam, committee members Md Aftab Uddin Sarker, Mir Mostaque Ahmed Robi and Masud Uddin Chowdhury, Ambassador of Sweden to Bangladesh Charlotta Schlyter and UNDP’s Resident Representative Sudipto Mukerjee addressed the seminar, among others.
