SC upholds Latif Siddiqui’s bail in graft case

DHAKA, Nov 17, 2019 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court
(SC) today upheld a High Court order that granted six months interim bail to
former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui in a case filed by Anti-Corruption
Commission (ACC).

A four-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain
passed the order, dismissing an appeal filed by Anti-Corruption Commission
(ACC) against the High Court order.

Earlier on November 11, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed
till today the High Court order.

The apex court had also asked the anti-graft body to file a regular leave
to appeal petition against that High Court order.

The High Court on November 4 granted six months interim bail to the former
textiles and jute minister.

According to the case documents, ACC assistant director Aminul Islam filed
the case against two including Latif Siddiqui with Adamdighi Police Station,
Bogra on October 17, 2017. The two were accused of causing loss of Taka 40.70
lakh to state exchequer by selling a land in Adamdighi upazila owned by
Bangladesh Jute Corporation, without floating any formal tender.

The other accused is the buyer of that land Jahanara Rashid of Bogra town.
