Rohingya drug smuggler killed in Cox’s Bazar gunfight

COX’S BAZAR, Nov 15, 2019 (BSS) – A Rohingya drug smuggler was killed today in a gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf in the district.

The deceased was identified as Nur Kabir, a resident of Mongdu district of Myanmar, said captain of BGB Battalion-2 in Teknaf Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan.

He said 1,20,000 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, two rounds of cartridge and a locally-made gun were also recovered from the scene.

About the gunfight, the captain said a special patrol team of BGB found suspicious activities of few persons and challenged them at Leda Beribadh area under Nhilla union of Teknaf in the early hours of today.

At one stage, the drug peddlers started firing on the BGB members leaving two BGB members injured, he said, adding that for self-defense, the BGB members also used guns against the drug smugglers and then the smugglers fled scene.

Khan said after the end of firing, BGB members searched the area and found a bullet-hit man. The critically injured person was taken to Teknaf Sadar Hospital and later Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead.

A case was filed in this regard with Teknaf police station.
