Sheikh Russell int’l tennis club cup tournament begins tomorrow
KHULNA, Nov 12, 2019 (BSS) – A six-day long international tennis
tournament dedicated to the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman’s youngest child Sheik Russell will begin tomorrow at five
venues in the city. This is the first tournament of its kind.
A total of 21 clubs including 64 players from 18 countries will
participate in the tournament. Khulna district administration organised the
event in cooperation with Khulna Officers’ Club.
The venues of the tournament are Khulna Circuit House, Sheikh Russell
Int’l Tennis Court, Officers’ Club, Khulna Club, Khulna University and DIG
Tennis Court in the city. The Jahanabad Cantonment Tennis Club ground will be
kept as reserved venue for the tournament.
Deputy Commissioner Md Helal Hossain disclosed it today afternoon at a
press conference held at the conference room of the Circuit House.
Mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Members of
Parliament of Khulna 2 and 4 constituencies Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel and Abdus
Salam Murshedi, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner (KMP) Khondokar
Lutful Kabir, Police Super SM Shafiullah, among others, were present at the
conference.
DC Helal said “We have taken all preparations to hold this tournament
safely.”
All players who will participate in the tournament already have come to
Khulna, he said, adding that they expressed their satisfaction seeing the
security measures taken by the law enforcement agencies.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to announce inauguration of the
tournament through videoconference tomorrow at 10.30am, he added.
The main objective of organising this tournament is because of the birth
centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 54th
birth anniversary of his youngest son Sheikh Russell.
The countries participating in the tournament are Bangladesh, Australia,
Bhutan, India, Iraq, South Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, United States, Cameron, Italy and
Pakistan.
Mayor of KCC Talukder said all necessary preparations were completed to
hold the tournament successfully.
A six-day long International Sheikh Russell Tennis cup tournament powered
by Saif PowerTech will end on November 18.
Later, Mayor of Khulna Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel,
MP, Abdus Salam Murshedhi, MP, DC Helal Hossain were unveiled the Logo and
Trophy of the tournament at City’s Shaheed Hadis Park.
