Indian national congress, Modi hail SC verdict, Sunni Waqf Board opposes

By Aminul Islam Mirja

NEW DELHI, Nov 9, 2019 (BSS) – The Opposition Congress today appealed for
calm and urged all communities to follow ‘secular values’ after the Supreme
Court judgment on the Ayodhya land dispute case.

The Supreme Court of India in its verdict today cleared the way for
construction of a Ram Temple on 2.77 acres of the land and directed centre to
allot an alternative 5-acre of land in a “prominent” place to the Sunni Waqf
Board for construction of a mosque.

Following the verdict, the Indian National Congress in a statement urged
all concerned to “abide by the secular values and spirit of fraternity
enshrined in our Constitution and to maintain peace and harmony”.

“It is the responsibility of each one of us to reaffirm our tradition of
mutual respect and unity among all that has defined our society through the
ages,” it added.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala, speaking on the issue, said,
“Supreme Court’s verdict has come, we are in favour of the construction of
Ram Temple. This judgment not only opened the doors for the temple’s
construction but also closed the doors for BJP and others to politicize the
issue.”

Earlier, party leader Priyanka Gandhi also appealed for calm as the Supreme
Court prepared to deliver its verdict.

“As all of you know, the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya case is going to
come today. In this hour, whatever be the decision of the apex court, the
unity, social harmony and love which is the thousand-year tradition of our
country needs to be upheld,” Vadra tweeted.

Besides, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while appealing for peace and
unity after the verdict said the verdict by the Supreme Court will reaffirm
people’s faith in judicial process.

He said the verdict should not be seen as anybody’s win or loss. “The
temple of justice resolved the decades-old case amicably,” he said in a
series of tweets.

Besides, the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board – one of the
respondents in the Ayodhya title suit — has expressed dissatisfaction with
the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute case.

“We think it is unjust… We can’t consider this justice. We are not
criticizing all parts of judgment,” the news agency NDTV quoted Zafaryab
Jilani, the lawyer for the Muslim group, as saying.

Pointing out that the disputed land and the land of the inner courtyard
has given to the other side, Jilani said, “Giving all land to the other side
is unjustified. We respect the top court, we have a right to disagree with
the verdict. The top court has changed judgment in many cases. We have a
right to seek review”.
