Govt keeps 1,577 medical teams ready in coastal districts

DHAKA, Nov 9, 2019 (BSS) – The government has kept a total of 1,577
medical teams ready in the country’s 15 coastal districts to provide
emergency medical services as cyclone Bulbul continued to approach.

Severe cyclonic storm Bulbul may hit the southwest coast of the country
by this evening as great danger signal number 10 was issued for the maritime
ports of Mongla and Payra and coastal districts of Bhola, Barguna,
Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bagerhat, Khulna, and Satkhira,
said Met Office.

The maritime port of Chattogram has been advised to hoist great danger
signal number 9. The signal was also effective for coastal districts of
Chattogram, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni and Chandpur.

Health minister Zahid Maleque and Director General of Directorate
General for Health Services (DGHS) Abul Kalam Azad cancelled holidays of
health officials.

The medical teams comprising medical officers/assistant surgeons, senior
staff nurses, midwife, deputy assistant community medical officers, health
care-providers and others employees concerned have been asked to give
necessary emergency medical services to people in the coastal districts, said
Dr Ayesha Akhter, assistance director of Health Emergency Operation Centre
and Control Room of DGHS.

She said health officials have been advised to work in coordination with
the local administrations and the ministry of disaster management and relief.

Ayesha said the medical teams have been asked to take special measures
for maternity services and the DGHS is coordinating emergency measures to
control non-communicable diseases in the areas.

DGHS said medicine and medical equipment reserves were adequate and the
equipment will be sent to remote cyclone-hit areas after reviewing the
medicine reserve of Central Medical Stores Depot and DGHS.
