Meghalaya Chief Minister for ensuring youth’s contribution to nation-building
DHAKA, Nov 07, 2019 (BSS) – As the youths signify driving force behind any nation’s forward march, Chief Minister of the State of Meghalaya, India, Conrad K. Sangma today underscored the need for ensuring the youth’s contribution to nation-building endeavours.
“We have to ensure that the youths are shaped and channelised to be constructive so that they can contribute positively to the nation. It is needed to make the youths productive so that they can act positively in nation building process,” said the Chief Minister.
Conrad K. Sangma came up with the observation while addressing a views exchange programme on education, investment, industry and commerce held at East West University (EWU) here.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of EWU and a former adviser to the caretaker government of Bangladesh Syed Manzoor Elahi, Chief Adviser of EWU and former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, EWU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, and Professor of Economics Department of EWU Dr. A. K. Enamul Haque, among others, were present on the occasion.
Sangma said that India’s biggest strength and challenge is the youth and Bangladesh also has similarity in this case.
“If we can shape and channelise the energy of the youths in a right direction, India can move forward. If we fail, it will be destructive for the country and the world,” said Sangma.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister also hoped for increased communication and trade between Bangladesh and the Northeastern States of India.
He also assured that the infrastructure of the Dawki land port and the immigration center will be significantly improved soon.
He highlighted the potential for increasing trade in several sectors of Bangladesh and the northeastern states of India which include tourism, cement, ceramics and agricultural products.
In his speech, Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir urged the government delegation and businessmen of Meghalaya accompanying the chief minister to take advantage of investment-friendly Export Processing Zones (EPZs) of Bangladesh.
Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin said connectivity with north-eastern states of India will improve with the completion of Dhaka-Sylhet four-lane road project and transforming of railways in the area from miter gauge to broad gauge.
Terming Bangladesh as self-reliant in cement production, he said local cement industries can consider importing raw material specially limestone from Meghalaya.
Meghalaya has also been producing cotton in recent years which have huge demand in Bangladesh as its RMG sector is fully dependent on imported cotton, he added.
A good number of teachers and students of EWU were present at the programme.
