AL sub-committee to plant 1cr saplings on Bangabandhu birth centenary
DHAKA, Nov 7, 2019 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) Forests and Environment Affairs Sub-Committee has decided to plant one crore saplings across the country to mark Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary.
“We have taken the step to plant one crore saplings across the country to mark the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary next year,” ruling AL Forests and Environment Affairs Secretary Delwar Hossain told BSS today.
He said, “Green Environment Movement” was formed to plant sapling across the country aimed at ensuring healthy living and working environment, flourish the quality of life, decreasing air and other types of pollution.
The Awami League in its election manifesto ahead of the 2018 general elections had given the highest importance to the environment and climate, and that is why the sub-committee is working sincerely to achieve the goals under the directives of Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina to tackle environmental risks, Delwar added.
“We have worked across the country to engage about 40 million people, who are directly involved in AL politics aimed at building awareness about adverse impact of climate change and how to get relief from natural calamity,” the former student leader said.
Besides, the AL Sub-Committee has also taken an initiative to hold a two-day conference on Environmental Solutions for Sustainable Development: Towards Developed Bangladesh (CESSD 2019) on November 27-28 with the slogan of “Green Environment for Sustainable Future”.
The conference will be held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka (Inauguration); CIRDAP, Chameli House, 17 Topkhana Road, Dhaka (Technical Sessions).
The environmental problems affecting sustainable development would be discussed in the conference. In the conference, there will be opportunities for scientists, academics, politicians, industrial professionals, government personnel to present their recent research findings on climate change and environment and exchange their ideas and knowledge along with the global initiatives.
Meanwhile, this is the first time the United Nation Organization (UNO) sent a thanks-letter to a sub-committee (forests and environment) of a political party in Bangladesh for its movement to protect the environment.
Delwar, also former president of Dhaka University Unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, said a decade of strong economic growth has helped Bangladesh reach lower middle-income status with sharply decreasing in poverty rate.
He said the sub-Committee staged many rallies on environment and climate changes issues and planted saplings on different schools and colleges and other important places across the country.
