Barishal-Bhola bridge construction will begin soon: Quader

DHAKA, Nov 5, 2019 (BSS)- Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said construction work of 8-kilometre Barishal-Bhola bridge will begin soon.

“Feasibility study of the country’s longest bridge construction has already been done. Construction work will begin soon. It will be longer than Padma bridge,” he told a view-exchange meeting with officials of Bridge Division and Bangladesh Bridge Authority at Setu Bhaban conference room at Banani here.

Quader said work on formulating Development Project Plan (DPP) for the bridge is going on and talks are underway over funding. China has shown interest to finance the bridge construction, he added.

About BNP’s allegation that corruption is taking place in major development projects, the minister said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been making unprecedented developments and progress in the country.

But, when BNP was in power, they did not make any visible development, he added. Quader said BNP is getting jealous witnessing the country’s development by the Awami League government.

He said though the World Bank withdrew its financing from Padma Bridge project, it gave proposal for funding in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Dhaka city.

“We do not want to take another BRT project as works of metro-rail and BRT projects are going on in Dhaka city,” he said.

The minister said the overall progress of Padma Bridge stood at 75 percent now while 49 percent work of Karnaphuli tunnel has been completed.

About the current situation at Jahangirnagar University (JU), Quader said the prime minister is looking into the matter and if required, she will take measures.

Bridge Division Secretary Mohammed Belayet Hossain chaired the view-exchange while officials of Bridge Division and Bangladesh Bridge Authority were present on the occasion.
