Purbachal will be zero-waste city: Tawfiq-e-Elahi

DHAKA, Nov 4, 2019 (BSS) – Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury today said Purbachal will be a zero-waste city while all kinds of waste will be turned into energy.

“Purbachal will be the zero-waste city and all sorts of waste, including faecal sludge, will be turned into energy,” he said while addressing a report launching ceremony in the capital.

He asked Bangladesh Bank, Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) and EDCOL to put a collective effort for making it happen.

The report “Poor People’s Energy Outlook (PPEO) 2018” was released by global development charity Practical Action, a press release said.

Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Tawfiq emphasised the government’s effort on ensuring uninterrupted and affordable power supply to all, and suggested consuming power and energy more responsibly.

He discussed the government’s future plan of introducing “scheduled electric cooking” for the marginalised communities during off-peak hour with a low-tariff.

Besides, the adviser put emphasis on expanding and strengthening subsidised solar energy across the country to make it compatible and equitable alongside the grid based electricity supply.

The new report reveals a lack of understanding about the best methods for delivering electricity and clean cooking for poor people and many marginalised people are still left behind.

Hasin Jahan, Bangladesh Country Director of Practical Action, presided over the function.
