Campaign undergoing against onion price in Chattogram

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 4, 2019 (BSS)- A team of the Ministry of commerce led by its deputy secretary Mohammad Selim launched a campaign against the alarming price hike of onion at country’s business hub Khatunganj in the port city this afternoon.

Executive Magistrate of District Administration Towhidul Islam, deputy director of National Consumers Rights Protections Directorate Shahida Sultana, Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, and the members of RAB and police forces took part in the campaign.

In the first day’s drive, one trader Khatungonj business hub Grameen Banijyalloy was fined with Tk. 50 thousand for selling onion at high price.

Deputy Secretary told journalists that commerce ministry is monitoring the onion price across the country.

He also apprised that Myanmar brand onion is being sold at wholesale market at Tk.90 per kg whereas the import cost of these onions is not more than Tk. 42 kg.

Selim further said if any wholesalers are found selling imported onions more than Tk.55-60 will be convicted.

He said there is no shortage of onions in the market but the unscrupulous traders are selling onion at exorbitant price to woe of the onion customers.
