Shakib’s controversial acts in timeline

DHAKA, Oct 29, 2019 (BSS)-Bangladesh Test and T20 skipper Shakib Al Hasan has always been on the spotlight since the beginning of his career as he keeps producing performance worthy alongside giving the birth of controversy one after another.

There was no doubt about the impact and the consistency he has brought in the team to make it a force to reckon with from a team to produce occasional flashes of brilliance.

But despite being one of the biggest names during this era of cricket, Shakib’s controversial acts often hogged headlines, sometimes surpassing his brilliant performance.

The controversial acts now reached a point that led his two years suspension from the all form cricket for two years, with one year of that suspended. The ICC gave him that one year suspended punishment because he accepted all the three charges brought by the world cricket apex body. If his approached satisfactory in this coming one year, he will be freed to play cricket again after exact one year.

Shakib was approached by the bookies in 2010 and 2103 also but during that time he disclosed those facts to the ICC and the action was not taken. But this time when he approached twice in 2018 Tri-series that involved Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka and once in IPL 2018, he didn’t inform this matter. This was the example of sheer indiscipline act for a cricketer who is vastly experienced.

He is the second cricketer from Bangladesh after Mohammad Ashraful to taste a ban. But unlike Ashraful he got sympathy since he is not directly involved in match-fixing.

Shakib has been in the center of all discussions since he led the players strike in Bangladesh, which came to an end last Wednesday after the BCB ceded to all the demands.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also gone up against Shakib after he signed a sponsorship deal with Grameenphone, which board chief Nazmul Hassan Papon has turned “unlawful”

Including the recent controversy for his promotional advertisement with telecom company Grameenphone while the BCB was having a continuing agreement with another telecom company Robi, these hullabaloos are not only reasons that neglected him being an idolizing figure even after being so successful in his job.

Shakib’s story with regards to controversial act is long indeed. Just after being the captain of the side in 2009, he made a robust statement by saying that he was not given the team he wanted.

After a disastrous World Cup performance at home in 2011 in which he was captain, Bangladesh tasted another humiliating defeat in Test and ODI in Zimbabwe. Shakib was stripped off the captaincy for mishandling the players.

And one year back in 2014, Shakib was suspended for three one-day international matches and was fined $3800. This would be one incident that Shakib would want to erase from his cricketing career. In the second one-dayer played at Dhaka, Bangladesh were chasing a stiff target of 290 against Sri Lanka. This was a do-or-die game for Bangladesh in the 3-match series as the hosts had lost the 1st ODI. Shakib got out to Ashan Priyanjan after holing out at deep long-off for 24 in the 22nd over.

A few overs later, Shakib was seen in the dressing room making an obscene gesture just as the replay of his dismissal was being shown.

Shakib was then suspended in 2015 and was denied to be granted for NOC (No Objection Certificate) for overseas competition. The punishment was handed out because of the serious misbehavior of Shakib with then the national team coach Chandika Hathurasingha.

Shakib was also found in altercation with a spectator during an ODI match against India in the same year.

Again in 2015, Rangpur Riders, led by Shakib, clashed with Sylhet Super Stars at Dhaka in the 3rd season of BPL.

Angry with the umpire’s decision, Shakib had a heated argument with him and even cussed during that time.

Although Rangpur went on to win the match, Shakib was not spared by the match referee for his actions. He was handed a one-match ban for his angry outburst.

And most recently in Nihadas trophy back in 2018, the incident happened in the final over of the Bangladesh innings, when the visitors required 12 runs to win. Unhappy with the umpire’s decision to not signal a no-ball, Shakib waved his hands from the boundary and asked the batsmen to come off the field.

The match officials diffused the situation, the game went on and Bangladesh chased down the total, registering a famous victory and cementing their place in the finals of the Nidahas Trophy.

For his unsporting behaviour, Shakib was fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point by the International Cricket Council. Shakib pleaded guilty and also admitted that he went overboard with his behaviour, assuring he would be careful next time. But he didn’t remain careful indeed and left Bangladesh in trouble at moment when the side is preparing for their first bilateral series in India.
