Thailand urged to raise Rohingya issue at ASEAN summit

DHAKA, Oct 29, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh has urged Thailand to raise the
issue of safe and dignified Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar with due
importance at the next 35th ASEAN Summit, to be started in Bangkok from
November 3 next.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in and
Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang as dialogue partners are expected to join
the three-day summit of 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)
nations, including Myanmar.

The request was made while a three-member delegation of Parliamentary
Standing Committee on the Foreign Affairs Ministry led by its Chairman M
Faruk Khan held a meeting with Thai National Assembly President and Speaker
of the House of Representatives Chuan Leekpai at Bangkok today, a press
release said here.

During the meeting, Faruk briefed Leekpai about four-ponit policy direction
of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding resolving Rohingya crisis and
sought Bangkok’s support for early, safe and sustainable repatriation of
Rohingya people.

He also warned negative consequence of the prolong stay of these Rohingya
people in Bangladesh and the ASEAN countries and beyond.

Leekpai reiterated that Thailand would continue her support regarding
Rohingya issue possibly in every forum.

The delegation of Bangladesh extended the Bangladesh speaker’s invitation
to the Thai National Assembly’s president to visit Bangladesh while Leekpai
gladly accepted it.

Faruk accompanied by other delegation members Lawmakers Nurul Islam Nahid
and M Nazmul Quaunine, also held a meeting with First Vice-President of the
Senate of Thailand Singsuk Singpai at the Thai Parliament.

During the meeting, the Bangladesh lawmakers sought Thai support for the
early repatriation of Rohingyas.
