Shahriar for more functional D8

DHAKA, October 29, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam said Bangladesh would like to see a more effective and functional D8 for realising full potential of economic cooperation among its member states.

He made the remark while visiting D8 Secretary General Ambassador Dato’ Jaafar Ku Shaari called on him at foreign ministry here on Monday, a foreign ministry press release said today.

D8, knows as Development-8 stands for Organization for Economic Cooperation that comprises eight largest Muslim developing countries – Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

During the meeting, Shahriar laid emphasis on creating better collaboration within the D8 member states by exchanging experiences and skills among each other on complementarily basis, especially in the field of energy, tourism and blue economy.

The secretary general briefed the state minister about the preparation upcoming 10th D8 Summit, scheduled to be held in Dhaka early next year.

He also described various initiatives undertaken by the D8 particularly in the field of technology, innovation and universal health care services at the newly established Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as about establishing of D8 Free Industrial Zones (FIZ).

D8 was established in 1997 with the objective of improving member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in the trade relations.

Bangladesh hosted the 2nd D8 Summit in 1999.
