Govt working to build a disaster resilient nation: Enamur

RANGPUR, Oct 28, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Disaster Management and
Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman, MP, today said the government is working to build
a disaster resilient nation instead of a relief-dependent country.

“We have taken a project for implementation with the Japanese assistance
for building a flood-resilient Bangladesh,” he told local journalists while
visiting the ongoing construction works of the District Relief Godown cum
Disaster Management Information Centre in the city.

The State Minister said the districts of Kurigram, Sunamganj and Cox’s
Bazar will be freed from floods through conducting dredging works of all
rivers in these districts in the first phase of implementation of the
project.

“We will start the implementation process of the project very soon in
these three districts where problems are prevailing with flood shelters and
shelters for domestic cattle heads during floods,” he said.

To overcome the situation, the government has envisaged a plan to build
a huge number of flood shelters and ‘Mujib Kella’ in every union of these
flood prone districts for safe stay of the flood-affected people and shifting
of the property and animal resources during any deluge.

The ‘mujib kella’ would be constructed on a land having at least five
acres of area and topper position from mainland so that flood-hit people and
their cattle heads can take shelter at the time of flood. It will also have
large open grassland to produce food for animals during other seasons.

“Earlier, the relied materials were being taken from Dhaka to the flood
and other natural disaster-affected areas across the country. As a result,
the affected people had to suffer a lot before getting relief goods from the
government,” he said.

“So why, the present government id building the District Relief Godown
cum Disaster Management Information Centre on all 64 districts as well as in
upazilas of the country to easily reach relief goods to the affected people
and reduce their sufferings,” Enamur said.

Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan, Additional Deputy Commissioner
(General) Syed Enamul Kabir, Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime) of Rangpur
Metropolitan Police Kazi Muttaki Ibnu Minan, Additional Superintendent of
Police Abu Maruf Hassan were present.
