Call for creating awareness on tobacco hazards

RANGPUR, May 31, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a seminar today laid emphasis on
creating awareness on severe health hazards associated with consumption of
smoking and non-smoking tobacco products to reduce its consumption.

They viewed this at the seminar on ‘Possible Hazards of Tobacco’ arranged at
the conference room of Civil Surgeon in observance of the World No Tobacco
Day- 2018 with the theme of “Tobacco Attacks Heart: Stay Away, Save Lives”.

The Civil Surgeon Office with District Anti-tobacco Task Force Committee,
Association for Community Development (ACD) and Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance
and other organisations organised the programmes.

Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam presided over the seminar. Deputy Civil
Surgeon Dr Mokaddem Hossain, Sadar Upazila Health and family Planning Officer
Dr Rabi Sankar Mandal, District Sanitary Inspector Mahbub Rahman, Programme
Officer of ACD Foysal Mandal, among others, addressed the event.

The civil surgeon put importance on ensuring strict enforcement of the
tobacco control laws to stop violation of the amended Tobacco Control Act
(TCA) and Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act by a section of
tobacco companies.

He laid emphasis on popularising cultivation of substitute crops replacing
tobacco to save many human lives and ensure smooth national development for
attaining the sustainable development goals.

Medical Officer at Civil Surgeon Office Dr Ali Irfan presented the keynote
paper narrating grievous consequences of consumption of smoking and non-
smoking tobacco products.

Programme Officer of ACD Foysal Mandal discussed consequences of
consumption of tobacco products and said 43 percent adult population in
Bangladesh where every sixth adult death is being caused by tobacco
attributed diseases.

“About 4.20 crore people are being affected by indirect smoking in addition
to huge losses being caused to the public health, economy and environment by
production, processing and consumption of tobacco products,” he added.

Dr Mokaddem said many people are dying from tobacco attributed diseases in
the country and 12-lakh becoming patients of lung cancer, cerebra-vascular,
coronary artery, chronic obstructive pulmonary and other tobacco-attributable
diseases every year.
